While Facebook, blogging and tweeting is generally associated with teenagers and young adults, use of these networks by folks aged 50 and older nearly doubled from April 2009 - May 2010, according to Pew's Internet & American Life Project.
Some statistics from the report:
- 1 in 10 users age 50-64 update their status on services like Twitter and Facebook.
- 1 in 5 users age 50-64 use social networking at least once per day.
- Social networking use for the 65+ crowd grew to 26% (from 13%) between April 2009 - May 2010
Given the increased use by this demographic, marketers will no doubt begin creating new campaigns on the social networking sites aimed at these users. This will also have an effect on SEO efforts, since online marketers will need to consider these avenues becuase of the growing participation.
